The Humanities and Social Sciences subjects involve the study of human behaviour and interaction in social, cultural, environmental, economic and political contexts. The focus is historical and contemporary, it incorporates perspectives ranging from personal to global. The aim is to support students to develop the ability to question, think critically, solve problems, communicate effectively, make decisions and adapt to change as active and informed citizens. Humanities consists of:
History - The study of history is based on evidence derived from remains of the past. It is interpretative by nature, promotes debate and encourages thinking about human values, including present and future challenges.
Geography - Geography enables students to question why the world is the way it is, and reflect on their relationships with and responsibilities for that world.
Civics and Citizenship - Civics and Citizenship provides students with
opportunities to investigate political and legal systems, and explore the
nature of citizenship, diversity and identity in contemporary society.
Economics and Business - Economics and business teaches students now and in their adult lives to actively and effectively participate in economic and business activities, while reflecting on the effects of their decisions on themselves, other people and places, now and in the future. These learning experiences are embedded through the junior years 7-9.
Year 7
In semester one, students study geography and the important role water plays in how societies are built. Students will also be introduced to concepts around government, democracy and laws in society.
In semester two, students will go back in time to study Ancient Egypt and how people lived, before moving into our own region and the early days of China and India.
Year 8
In semester one, students study landforms and landscapes of the world and how cities have changed in response to the natural world. Students will also delve into the concepts of citizenship, diversity and identity in local and international societies.
In semester two, students explore medieval Europe and the meeting of the Western and Islamic worlds. Students will also study Aztec society and the Spanish empire that conquered it,
Year 9
In semester one, students research the Industrial Revolution and all the changes it caused across the globe. Students will also learn about the role of Australia in World War 1 and how it shaped the nation.
In semester two, students will learn about biomes and food security in the world. Students will also look at the geographies of Interconnections in societies.
