Mathematics is an essential part of our everyday lives. Studying mathematics prepares students for higher education, work and engagement in a complex and rapidly changing world. Mathematics helps to equip students with skills they will need as future citizens of the 21st century. These skills include critical thinking, creative thinking, communication, collaboration and teamwork, personal and social skills, and information and communication technologies (ICT).

Years 7-9

During the Junior Secondary years, students will study a spiralling curriculum where in each year students revisit previous knowledge and skills and then build on these. Students will have access to online learning through the Education Queensland Portal “The Learning Place” and the online homework and learning website “Mangahigh”. Tutoring will be available every Thursday from 3pm to 4pm and homework club will be available every Tuesday and Thursday during first break, both in the resource centre. Students are required to have the minimum of a scientific calculator for all junior mathematics classes.

The three strands which the form the National Mathematics Curriculum include:

  • Number and Algebra
  • Measurement and Geometry
  • Statistics and Probability.

The four criteria for assessment purposes include:

  • Fluency
  • Understanding
  • Problem Solving
  • Reasoning.

A variety of assessment instruments will be used to determine student’s knowledge and understanding as well as their ability to problem solve and provide reasoning for their decisions.

Assessment instruments include:

  • Formative tasks – exit passes, pre-tests, post-tests, ongoing monitoring of student’s understanding of concepts being taught and learned
  • Written exams – closed book
  • Assignments – individual &/or small group work
  • In-class tasks.
