What is Design?

The Design subject focuses on the application of design thinking to envisage creative products, services and environments in response to human needs, wants and opportunities. Designing is a complex and sophisticated form of problem-solving that uses divergent and convergent thinking strategies that can be practised and improved. Designers are separated from the constraints of production processes to allow them to appreciate and exploit innovative ideas.


What makes a student suited to Design?

Students who achieve success in Design are those who:

  • generate many ideas to explore solutions to problems
  • think critically and creatively
  • work both independently and collaboratively with others
  • have an interest in sketching/visual communication
  • reflect on their own and existing designs to make improvements.

Year 9 students - entrance will be determined through Year 9 Exit Grade

Year 10Semester 1Students will experience a range of design professions, such as architecture and digital design. They will apply design thinking to envisage creative services and environments in response to human needs, wants and opportunities.

 Semester 2Students will experience a range of design professions, such as fashion design, jewellery design, product design. They will apply design thinking to envisage creative products and services in response to human needs, wants and opportunities.

Year 11Unit 1Design in Practice
Students learn about and experience designing in the context of design in practice. Fundamental to design in practice is the principle that design is a purposeful process undertaken by design professionals in response to identified needs, wants and opportunities. Students are introduced to the breadth of design professions, the design process and how designs of the past inform contemporary design practice.

Unit 2Commercial Design
Students will learn about and experience designing in the context of commercial design. Fundamental to commercial design is the principle that design is a commercial endeavour that requires designers to respond to the needs and wants of clients.

Year 12Unit 3Human-Centred Design
Students learn about and experience designing in the context of human-centred design. Fundamental to HCD is the principle that a designer considers human needs and wants as a higher priority than other influences throughout the design process.

Unit 4Sustainable Design
Students learn about and experience designing in the context of sustainable design. Fundamental to sustainable design is the principle that designers should create new designs that can be supported indefinitely in terms of their economic, social and ecological impact on the wellbeing of humans.
