What is Industrial Graphics Skills?

Industrial Graphics Skills focuses on the underpinning industry practices and production processes required to produce the technical drawings used in a variety of industries, including building and construction, engineering and furnishing.

Students understand industry practices, interpret technical information and drawings, demonstrate and apply safe practical modelling procedures with tools and materials, communicate using oral and written modes, organise and produce technical drawings and evaluate drawings using specifications.

Students develop transferable skills by engaging in drafting and modelling tasks that relate to business and industry, and that promote adaptable, competent, self-motivated and safe individuals who can work with colleagues to solve problems and complete tasks.

What makes a student suited to Industrial Graphics Skills?

Students who achieve success in Industrial Graphics Skills are those who:
  • are hardworking and have an ability to work individually and in teams.
  • want to develop understanding of industrial graphics and its application to industry.
  • are preparing for vocational employment.
  • understand that the basis of practical skills is in theoretical understanding.

What do students study in this subject and how are they assessed?

  Unit OverviewsAssessment
Year 10Semester 1Students will be introduced to drawing skills and procedures in the manufacturing industry. They will develop computer aided drafting skills and an introduction to CAD operated equipment. (3d printer / Laser)

Summative assessment 1:
Produce a multipart 3D model suitable for laser cutting (e.g. balsa glider)

Summative assessment 2:
Design and 3D model a chess set suitable for laser cutting

Semester 2Students will be introduced to drawing skills and procedures in the engineering and construction industries. They will develop computer aided drafting skills and be introduced to CAD operated equipment. (3D printer / Laser)

Summative assessment 3:
3D model a product with moving parts (engineering)

Summative assessment 4:
Design and 3D model a building (e.g. Residential, Business)

Year 11Unit 1Introduction to drafting in the manufacturing industry.
Students are introduced to industry practices and drafting processes associated with drafts people, who use drawing skills and procedures to create technical drawings (specifications) that facilitate the manufacture of quality products in the manufacturing enterprises.

Formative internal assessment 1:
PRACTICAL DEMO - Students will individually produce a range of basic orthographic and pictorial view of single piece item

Formative internal assessment 2:
PROJECT - Students will individually produce a set of detail engineering drawings and a 3D print

Unit 2Introduction to the drafting in the construction and furnishing industry. Students are introduced to industry practices and drafting processes associated with drafts people, who use drawing skills and procedures to create technical drawings with the required specifications and presentations for the furniture production and building and construction industries.

Formative internal assessment 3:
PRACTICAL DEMO – Students will individually produce a range of basic orthographic and pictorial view of timber workshop projects

Formative internal assessment 4:
PROJECT - Students will individually create a set of detail technical drawings, for a proposed facility e.g. (gym/holiday house/sporting change rooms/workshop)

Year 12Unit 3Working cooperatively in drafting workplaces.
This unit builds upon previous learning of industry practices associated with drafts people, who work in teams using drawing skills and procedures to create technical drawings (specifications) for the engineering industry.

Summative internal assessment 1 (IA1):
PRACTICAL DEMO- Students will individually create a detail drawing including orthographic and pictorial view of a multi piece project.

Summative internal assessment 2 (IA2):
PROJECT – Produce a set of detail engineering drawings and a 3D print, to required workshop specification

Unit 4

Drafting for Product development
The unit builds on previous learning of industry practices and drafting processes used in the creation of technical drawings for the furnishings and building and construction industries. Product quality depends on drafts people understanding industry-specific tools and materials and the ability to produce drawings to these specifications.

Summative internal assessment 3 (IA3):
PRACTICAL DEMO - Students will individually produce a range of workshop drawings for the Furnishing Industry.

Summative internal assessment (IA4):
PROJECT – Create a set of detail architectural drawings, for a residential dwelling.
