​In addition to the mandated subjects of English, Maths, Science, Health and Physical Education and Humanities, Year 9 students get to elect and study 3 elective subjects as listed below.

Students who wish to continue studying LOTE may do so also in lieu of one of their other electives.

LOTE - Indonesian

Visual Art

Visual Art conveys meaning and knowledg​e about the world – history, culture, experience, and expression. Art Education develops critical thinking and creative problem solving in an increasingly globalised society.
An understanding of visual literacy enables students to be able to make sense of their environment. In Visual Art students transform their visual perception and ideas into expression in a material form, via experiences with a variety of media in two and three dimensions and digital experiences.

How learning occurs

Through practical and theory lessons students will develop their skills in three areas – Folio of drawings and research – visual diary, art pieces and Responding (evaluation/reviews of art work).

Dance

Dance allows total expression of self, as well as being a form of exercise that offers a holistic approach to health comprising of physical, emotional and social elements.
Technique and performance work is based on a wide range of dance styles studied during the Year 9 course of study, directed by student’s areas of interest. Theory aspects of the course focus on dance history, study of choreographers, Australian dance, ethnic dance, anatomy, dance injuries and performance reviews.

Drama

 

Students of Drama use a range of communication processes to explore dramatic forms and styles.  In doing so, they work towards defining and shaping their own identity and understanding the world we live in.  
This is a fun unit where students are given the opportunity to analyse script and its characters and perform as a team.  Students will explore stage settings, props and costuming. Students will experience different dramatic styles such as:
  • Process drama 
  • Children’s Theatre
  • Melodrama
  • Clowning 
  • Puppetry
  • Improvisation

How learning occurs

Through practical and theory lessons students will develop their skills in three areas - Forming, Presenting and Responding (evaluation/reviews of drama).

Business Studies

 

Studying the world of business helps students prepare for their financial future through learning the skills needed to move forward in the 21st century. 
The Year 9 curriculum gives students the opportunity to further develop their understanding of economics and business concepts by exploring the interactions within the global economy. Students are introduced to the concept of an ‘economy’ and explore what it means for Australia to be part of the Asia region and the global economy. They consider the interdependence of participants in the global economy, including the implications of decisions made by individuals, businesses and governments. Key inquiry questions include:
  • How do participants in the global economy interact?  
  • What strategies can be used to manage financial risks and rewards?  
  • How does creating a competitive advantage benefit business?
  • What are the responsibilities of participants in the workplace and why are these important?

How learning occurs

The business curriculum fosters enterprising individuals who are able to effectively embrace change; seek innovation; work with others; show initiative, flexibility and leadership; use new technologies; plan, organise and manage risk; and use resources efficiently. Economics and business will better place students now and in their adult lives to actively and effectively participate in economic and business activities, while reflecting on the effects of their decisions on themselves, other people and places, now and in the future.

Food and Nutrition

Every day we eat foods that originate in other cultures.  We use different preparation techniques to explore the tastes of Italy, China, France and other countries. Do you want to go on a cultural journey? Take the time to explore and experience the world of food. "Food from other cultures" investigates the variety of foods eaten in Australia and how to use the foods in a healthy Australian Diet. Students explore the world of food and how different cultures meet their food requirements. They design foods that link Australian foods to other cultures and how the foods have influenced what we eat today. 

How learning occurs

Investigation to create designed solutions, using criteria for success to evaluate designs and producing high quality products safely and skilfully. Students will communicate and document projects and use management skills.

Wood Technology

Wood Technology will develop a range of practical skills and knowledge relating to the construction of projects. This is a practical workshop subject that provides students the opportunity to work with a range of woodworking tools and machinery in the completion of projects.  Students will be challenged to developed skills as they complete a range of projects in timber and plastics.  In conjunction with projects, students will complete related theory tasks based on projects to consolidate learning.

Students will complete project based tasks and related theory.

Metal Technology

Metal Technology will develop a range of practical skills and knowledge relating to the manufacturing of projects.
This is a practical workshop subject that provides students the opportunity to work with a range of metalworking tools and machinery in the completion of projects. Students will develop skills in metal fitting, sheet metal fabrication, metal machining, electronics and plastic fabrication. In conjunction with projects, students will complete related theory tasks based on projects to consolidate learning.

Digital Technology

If you enjoy creating things from scratch and seeing them work and want to learn to code and program, then Digital Technologies is the subject for you! Digital Technologies will teach you about programming and coding and give you a great range of skills that employers really value. All while experimenting, tinkering and having fun with:
  • Robotic programming using text-based languages
  • Website or app design and development using HTML and CSS languages
  • Computer systems and networks
  • Design and development processes
  • Problem solving skills
  • Collaboration techniques both online and in person

How learning occurs

Due to the hands-on nature of this subject, most learning will take the form of projects. Peer-teaching, where students work together, is encouraged and students participate in an online course allowing for 24/7 access to all learning materials.

Esports

This brand new subject is at the cutting edge of new technology.  Students will get to learn about the rapidly booming professional and amateur gaming industry, including sneak peaks into a wide range of future career pathways.  Learning experiences include:

  • Establish network security & data protection
  • Analyse the careers of successful & notable professional gamers
  • Design, plan and execute your own Esports Tournament
  • Design your digital avatar & learn character animation

How learning occurs

Due to the hands-on nature of this subject, most learning will take the form of projects. Peer-teaching, where students work toge​ther, is encouraged and students participate in an​ online course allowing for 24/7 access to all learning materials.

LOTE - Indonesian

Studying a second language can give you an advantage in business, and open up whole new worlds.
Australia has become one of the major tourist destinations in the world.  Using virtual tours and internet sites we’ll investigate the world of travel – in Australia, Indonesia and other countries.  Then students will explore creative and interactive ways in advertising and attracting overseas visitors.  Students will also investigate the different types of foods, recipes, culture, TV and the media in Indonesian and Australia and create a Variety Show to be presented at the Southern Cluster Cultural Festival.  

How learning occurs

 
  • Adapting verbal language and non-verbal language according to purpose, context and audience.  
  • Using familiar language to help interpret and convey main ideas and supporting details.  
  • Noticing and comparing similarities and differences between the target language and English.
