What is Media Arts in Practice?
Media Arts in Practice focuses on the role media arts plays in the community in reflecting and shaping society's values, attitudes and beliefs. It provides opportunities for students to create and share media artworks that convey meaning and express insight.
Students learn how to apply media technologies in real-world contexts to solve technical and/or creative problems. When engaging with school and/or local community activities, they gain an appreciation of how media communications connect ideas and purposes with audiences. They use their knowledge and understanding of design elements and principles to develop their own works and to evaluate and reflect on their own and others' art-making processes and aesthetic choices.
Students learn to be ethical and responsible users of and advocates for digital technologies, and aware of the social, environmental and legal impacts of their actions and practices.

Students who achieve success in Media in Practice are those who:
- are interested in designing and producing multimedia products (moving and still image)
- have a creative and inquiring mind, an interest in watching and discussing a variety of media products such as films, television shows, music videos, animations, websites
- want to create and experiment with ideas by using technologies such as video cameras, editing and design software
- have demonstrated ability to create both written and multi-modal (e.g. visual) texts

What do students study in this subject and how are they assessed?

Year 10 | Semester 1 | Suspense Stories Students develop their understanding and use of foundational film-making codes, conventions and processes through the study of genre-specific products. They will examine how the silent film movement has influenced modern cinema and experiment with a range of technologies, representations and film conventions to express and explore visual ideas. Students will develop an understanding of how audiences make meaning from moving-image media, and then design and produce their own moving-image media products.

| Personal Viewpoints Students explore the relationships between media arts and the development of their own and others' social values, attitudes and beliefs. They respond to a societal issue of choice, using media language to express a personalised viewpoint. Students may choose to provide a comment or critique and should consider how audiences will access and engage with the media artwork. They demonstrate creative thinking skills as they innovate and make the planned media artwork. | Formative internal assessment A1: Project – make and evaluate a design product and plan a media artwork that communicates a personal viewpoint about a societal issue. | Representations Students explore the concept of representation in media artworks. They respond to the ways that media artworks can alter, question, or add to representation of reality, using media language to make a representation for social media or gaming platforms. Students negotiate an appropriate social media or gaming platform with their teacher and should consider how audiences' access and engage with the chosen platform. | Formative internal assessment B1: Project - make a design product and plan a media artwork that explores representations; evaluate social media or gaming platforms. Year 12 | Unit C
| Community Students are given the opportunity to develop moving-image media products for their school and local community, developing an understanding of working for a client, and refining their communication and collaboration skills. Students will study how moving-image media is used to create community connections, raise awareness and celebrate local stories. They will explore specific contexts for production and target audiences, as well as ethical considerations related to the production of media in our society. Students will develop the knowledge and skills required to design and produce a short video or documentary about a person, group, program or idea within their school or local community. | Summative internal assessment C1 : Project - make and evaluate a design product and plan a media artwork that communicates ideas about a person, event, issue or other aspect in the community. | Persuasion Students explore the concept of persuasion in media artworks. They identify marketing styles or trends in the media industry and use persuasive media language to pitch a media artwork. Students may work with or for a client when developing the artwork or select another target audience. By investigating how other media artists use marketing styles or trends for particular audiences, they discover ways of using media languages, technologies and techniques. Students work individually and/or collaboratively to experiment with and explore ways to persuade specific audiences and to plan a media artwork. | Summative Internal Assessment D1 : Project - make and evaluate a persuasive pitch and plan a media artwork that follows marketing styles or trends for an identified purpose, including a design pitch.
