What is Photography?

This subject is in preparation and leads into the CUA20720 Certificate II in Visual Arts course, run in Years 11 and 12. ​

Photography is a one-year course that allows learners to develop the basic creative and technical skills that underpin photography. Whilst still under the Visual Arts branch, this subject focuses entirely on photography. Students will study various photographic styles using digital cameras, and equipment, along with using photographic software on computers. Genres addressed include Creative Photography, Macro, Landscapes, Food Photography, Lighting and Portraits. The key learning experiences within this course include:

  • Occupational, Health and Safety
  • Basic Operation of a DSLR Camera
  • Using Studio Lighting
  • Analysing and Critiquing Professional Photographic work/s
  • Capturing Photographic Images
  • Enhancing and Manipulating Images using Adobe Photoshop Creative Cloud
  • Compiling a Professional Photographic Portfolio​

What makes a student suited to Photography?

Students who achieve success Photography are those who:

  •  Have creativity and imagination: being able to look at something ordinary, or even extraordinary, and find a million different ways to interpret what they are seeing and convey those interpretations in beautiful and meaningful photos.

  • Have a good eye for detail: to ensure that all elements within the photo—the lighting, the composition, the subject, and everything else in between—work together harmoniously to convey the right vision or message.​
  •  

    Have patience and flexibility: being able to work both independently and in a group. You need to be patient enough to wait for the perfect lighting, be patient enough to work with models and people and most of all, you need to be patient enough to keep trying when you simply can't get the right shot. You also need to be flexible enough to make the best of undesirable conditions.
  • Have passion: a good photographer is passionate about photography and willing to learn and improve continuously.
  • Want a career in Photography or Film are planning a career where photographic skills are required and are interested in the mechanics of film development and digital editing.

What prerequisites must students meet in order to take this subject?

Students must have studied Visual Art in Years 8 or 9, preferably as these skills are used in Photography.


What is the cost of this subject?
There is a subject levy under Visual Art, which students are required to pay. This covers the use of all the camera and lighting equipment, along with software purchase costs. Print credit is expected to be maintained for colour printing at school.

Students must provide their own Laptop with the following specifications as a minimum:

Term 1: Creative Photography

  • Exploring a variety of photographic techniques: Pinhole, Macro, Water Droplets, Casting Shadows, Reflective Colour, Reflections and Colour Filters
  • Developing your own creative interpretations and reflecting on your own individualised, informed responses to chosen concepts.

Term 2: Elements and Principles of Design

  • Exploring the “Elements and Principles of Design" through the lens, using a variety of photographic techniques such as, photo collage, macro, black and white photography and colour photography.
  • Understanding and developing editing techniques using the photographic software, Adobe Photoshop.

Comparing Texts

  1. Demonstrate an ability to compare the works of two Australian Photographers, analysing photographs.

 Semester 2

Term 3: Creative Objects

  • Exploring natural and artificial lighting, using composition to create a number of photographs including still life, creative and experimental photography.
  • Understanding and developing ways to make ordinary objects look extraordinary.

Analysing Photographs

  • Looking at photographs from different times and places, making meanings and responding to questions.
  • Using the Elements and Principles of design to analyse photographs and discuss meaning.
  • Discussing composition and photographic elements.

Term 4: Top Photographer

  • Top Photographer is based on the TV series and will run as such. Students will be given a design brief from a different company each week, where they will plan, organise props and set up scenes, photographing with different shot types and angles. Students will then edit and present their best photo for each challenge, for the class to vote on.
  • Each week a “Top Photographer" will be crowned.
